The
stage
The stage is the place where artists work during a performance. In technical jargon, it's also called the acting area. In some Italian-style theaters, the stage is slightly sloped in order to improve visibility from the audience.
For ballet, the stage floor must be soft in order to absorb shocks when dancers jump, for example. That’s why it's covered with a special carpet, or sometimes special floor for dancing.
In theatre jargon, "stage right" (or côté jardin in French) is the right side of the stage as seen from the audience, as opposed to "stage left" (or côté cour in French), which is the left side. Dancers on stage can use the French memory aid "côté cour, côté cœur" (left side, heart side), as the heart is always on the left side.
Good to know:
The stage is composed of the acting area and the backstage together.
